Sand peels are created by applying an adhesive, such as epoxy or resin, to the wall of a trench in modern sand deposits and joined to a backing material such as wood or fabric.  When the adhesive sets the backing material can be lifted away leaving a thin layer of the sand adhered to the backing material, with depositional features intact.  Peels can also be made from [[Core_alteration_and_preservation#Methods_of_core_preservation|cores]] or outcrops of unconsolidated sands.  Sand peels allow for the capture of details in sedimentary features for analysis away from the field, or for use in teaching.
