Backstripping

A key step in basin modeling, where successively older rock layers are removed to decompact underlying layers, thus allowing reconstruction of the burial history in a basin. The method requires decompaction of the remaining sequence of layers after each stage of backstripping to account for the amount of compaction at each step of burial.[1]
