Biodegradation

The microbial alteration of organic matter. Petroleum can undergo aerobic or anaerobic (e.g., sulfate-reducing or methanogenic) biodegradation during migration or while in the reservoir, or at surface seeps, typically at temeraptures approximately less than 80°C.[1]
