Inert organic matter having Rock-Eval pyrolysis hydrogen indices below 50 mg hydrocarbon/g TOC in thermally immature rocks; dominated by organic matter that was recycled or extensively oxidized during deposition. Sometimes the type IV pathway is not shown on Van Krevelen diagrams, but it lies below the type III pathway.[2]
