The process where asphaltenes precipitate from crude oil. Laboratory or refinery deasphalting is achieved by adding light hydrocarbons, such as pentane r hexane, to the oil. A similar process can occur in nature when methane and other light hydrocarbons that escape from deep reservoirs enter a shallower oil reservoir.[1]
