Dolostone is a term for dolomitized limestone to distinguish the rock from dolomite the mineral.  The term has fallen out of favor, and 'dolomite' is now recommended as the name of the rock as well as the mineral.<ref name=Glossary of Geology>Glossary of Geology, 5th edition, 2005, American Geological Institute, p. 189</ref> Limestone (calcium carbonate, CaCO<sub>3</sub>) is dissolved and dolomite (CaMg(CO<sub>3</sub>)<sub>2</sub>) is precipitated  in the presence of magnesium (Mg).
