AAPG Wiki:Scope and strategy
These notes are based on a meeting between the wiki team and the executive team on 19 June 2013.
Crowdsourcing is what we do as a scientific organization. — David Curtiss
Purpose
- To be profoundly useful to AAPGs members.
- To funnel users to AAPG content, both free and paywalled.
- To update older content, and keep it evergreen.
- To be a new publishing avenue for AAPG members to publicize their work, alongside books, Bulletin, and Search & Discovery.
- To be a channel for public outreach.
- To be a learning platform.
- To develop AAPG's reputation as a thought-leader and authority in petroleum.
- To be part of AAPG's experimentation with new media.
Character
- Open — The wiki should be publicly readable, publically editable, and openly licensed.
- Layered — The wiki should be approachable on any level, from novice to professional.
- Rich — The wiki should provide a multi-faceted experience for readers.
Requirements
- We must provide copious smart links, preferably automatically, to other AAPG content.
- We must seed with older content, and invite substantial edits and contributions from the membership.
- There should be a path from wiki back to publication (once green again).
- There should be recognition for contributing members.
- Members of the public should be able to edit the wiki and use its content.
