AAPG Wiki:Project timeline

These are early estimates of the tasks involved in setting up the wiki and seeding it with content.

I propose starting with Methods in Exploration 10: Development Geology Reference Manual, because it is clearly organized, has broad appeal, and seems a good fit for the wiki. It has the drawback of there being no figures in digital format; they will have to be extracted from the PDF or redrawn (preferable, where possible).

There are 10 parts in the book, each with multiple chapters, for 136 chapters in all. Converting chapters to articles would make for very long articles, so each chapter will become some number of wiki articles, perhaps 3 on average. So we anticipate that the manual will result in about 400 articles. In the task list below, most of the systematic conversion work has been estimated at 10 pages per day, which is easily manageable.

There are two classes of work: project work and advanced wiki coding, which would require full-rate professional consulting, and more straightforward wiki editing, which would be half-rate. I can procure help at this rate, but at least some of it should be undertaken by AAPG, to help with continuity and connection to the wiki content.

Tasks

Full rate items

  • Basic project definition and scoping: 5 days (started)
  • Development of governance, terms & conditions, etc.: 10 days
  • Wiki development (infrastructure, etc): 10 days (started)
  • Scraper software development: 20 days (started)
  • Planning and attending roll-out events and marketing: 10 days
  • Contingency: 15 days
  • TOTAL: 70 days

Half rate items

  • Page finessing after conversion: 40 days
  • Image extraction: 40 days
  • Table conversion: 20 days
  • TOTAL: 100 days

In addition to these estimates, I believe we will need at 2–3 days/week of an AAPG IT resource, for building infrastructure, etc.

Overall timeline

The taks above take us to a roll-out at the AAPG ACE in April 2014, but most of the work will be done by Christmas. After Christmas we can focus on community building and next steps.
