The process where [[asphaltenes]] precipitate from [[crude oil]]. Laboratory or refinery deasphalting is achieved by adding light hydrocarbons, such as [[pentane]] r [[hexane]], to the oil. A similar process can occur in nature when [[methane]] and other light hydrocarbons that escape from deep reservoirs enter a shallower oil reservoir.<ref name=Petersetal_2012>Peters, Kenneth E., David J.
