Lateral is a term applied to either a single branch or individual multiple ([[multilateral well|multilateral]]) branches off the vertical wellbore in a targeted, potentially productive interval. In a single-branch case, a lateral runs from the end of the [[bend (curve)|curve]] ([[heel]]) to the [[toe]].
